KNEE SURGERY
Common knee pathologies include:
- Meniscal tears
- Anterior cruciate and collateral injuries
- Patella dislocation
- Plica syndrome
Dr Bond performs mostly arthroscopic knee surgery.
MENISCAL TEARS
A twisting injury to the knee can cause a meniscal tear. This most often presents with persistent knee pain and sometimes “locking” of the knee.
Surgery may involve arthroscopic repair or resection of the meniscus, depending on the tear configuration.
Day procedure
30 minute surgery
Risks : Re-tear
ACL TEARS
Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tears are most often caused by a fixed foot with a pivoting knee. Immediate pain and swelling of the knee usually occur. Concomitant tears of the meniscus may also be present. Reconstruction of the ACL ligament restores stability to the knee.
ACL reconstruction is most often performed using a hamstring autograft, augmented with a fibre tape internal brace (Arthrex)
Overnight admission
1.5-hour surgery
Risks:
Re-tear
Infection
Stiff knee
PATELLA DISLOCATION
Young patients, especially those with lax ligaments, are at risk of patella dislocations. If conservative treatment fails and dislocations become recurrent, surgery should be considered.
Medial patellofemoral ligament (MPFL) reconstruction with fibre tape (Arthrex) reinforcement
Overnight admission
1.5-hour surgery
Risks:
Infection
Malalignment
